According to the legend, when the first settlers arrived to these lands about IX b.c., the surrounding beauty captivated them to the point where they forgot how shallow it was. Their boat was beached and they decided to establish themselves in nearby Empurias where a prosperous society soon emerged. With time, the river brought soil from the Pirenees mountains further pushing out the sea, to the point where the boat was completely out of the water.

Little by little their boat transformed itself into a Mas (a farm house). A Mas that in reality belongs more to the sea than to the land. And this is how such a Mas got its name (Mar means Sea).

From then on, all those that overnight in it feel time is at a still. One of its latest inhabitants, Mr. Martinet not too long ago still traveled by bicycle to the neighboring town of San Pedro Pescador, where the Mas is still known by many as "Mas Martinet". We include here old pictures from the Mas taken from the Fluvià river and the neighboring fields.
Surrounded by wetlands, in the Aigüamolls del Empordà natural parc, the Mas has about 1Km of beach front property. It is contiguous to the north with the Fluvia river, to the East with the Sant Pere Pescador beach. The beach is never ever crowded and is ideal fur sun bathing or to practice sea sports. It sits in the middle of a very long stretch of beach over 10 Km long (6 miles). A small section of such beach is often used for Kite Surfing. The flat fields surrounding the beach create a microclimate that brings a constant sea breeze ideal to practice such sport. The Mas is close to the town (2Km) yet the closest building is about 1Km away.

The Mas has been restored for inauguration in 2005 keeping the original outside look while giving it warm interior decoration. There is the possibility of staying there for 130€ in a suite (double bedroom, private bath, plus private living space with additional bed possible) or for 90€ in a double bed with private bath. Each room has its own peculiar feel and charm. In addition, there is a wide porch open to the south, plenty of terrace space, over an acre of grass, a 300 feet pond to swim and a game room including billiard and fuzz ball table. Breakfast will be served for 10€ per person. Sales tax (7% IVA) needs to be added to all these prices.

In any case, you will see there are many options to get here. We love all of them. The Empordà region is full of beautiful corners. Perhaps you can follow a different route each time you come to Mas del Mar.
Each room is decorated to its style.
The afternoons in Mas del Mar are very charming. There are 6 fireplaces and comfortable common areas. In particular, there is a room with a billiard, a fuzz ball table and a game table. Given that the surrounding fields are very flat, it is one of the best places in Costa Brava to enjoy de magnificent sunsets that inspired Dalí.
